AIC context mindmap (set in 1912, written in 1945) DIDACTIC PLAY
1912 Strikes
a movement of social change begins but very slowly
industrialisation of cities led to appalling conditions
growing number of workers in factories-people moved to work in factories meaning limited infrastructure areas for population growth-force for social change
Great Depression
Britain's trade fell in half and the heavy industry fell by a third
1932-registered unemployed numbers reached 3.5 million and many more had only part time employment. Unemployment reached 70% in some areas. Many families depended on payment from the local government.
Welfare State
1942 (December) Beverage report was published proposing a series of measures to aid people who need help or are in poverty
Beverage recommended to the government they should find ways to tackle disease, ignorance, squalor, idleness, providing income, healthcare, education, housing and employment
assumptions were that the NHS would provide free healthcare to all citizens
Suffragettes
As men went to the Western Front (WW1) women had the chance to prove how indispensable they were in the fields/factories
The government couldn't resist this by 1918 and gave women the right to vote if they were over 30
It would still take another 10 years to get women equal to men
Many women shared prisons for their suffragette protests and WW1 was the turning point for the suffragettes however many arrests were made!
WSPU formed in 1903 and they dedicated themselves to securing the vote for women to take part in democratic processes
They would break windows/throw stones/burn slogans/cut telephone wires/burn or bomb empty buildings
many arrested suffragettes went on a hunger strike in prison and many tried to kill themselves
Poverty
Britain saw a huge population increase in 19th century
large numbers looking for work kept wages down to a low level and housing was scarce and expensive
overcrowding as a result of this magnified in London
slum housing delvelops
WW1 Democracy
allies disliked the fact that the central powers were countries which had very powerful elite who wanted more power and resisted democracy
universal male suffrage along with the vote for some adult women was only introduced at the end of the war
allied victory led to the maintenance and the extension of liberal democracy in Europe
When the German army appeared to be close to victory in spring 1918, the Kaiser crowed that this was the vindication of monarchy and autocracy over democracy
Titanic
designed to be the last word in comfort and luxury and even though there were a lot of advanced safety features, there weren't enough lifeboats to accommodate all those aboard.
builders of titanic claimed she was "unsinkable" but on 14th April 1912, Titanic hit an iceberg at 11:40pm
women and children were 1st protocol causing many men to be left on board when it sank
1945 Election
Churchill was defeated in the election
Beverage report was popular and the Labour Party adopted the report
the conservatives accepted many of the principles of the report but claimed they could not be afforded.
41% of people considered housing to be the most important issue faced by the country
Women
stereotypical role: if married they stayed home to look after children while husband worked and brought back a wage
if single they did work which involved some kind of service such as waitressing, cooking etc
young women were expected to get married and have children
there weren't many women employed as things like doctors and architects
In 1981, women were told that they could not be forced to live with a man if they didn't want to as most women were reliant on their husbands for a source of money. Many of them couldn't leave due to money.
JB Priestly
WW1-radio broadcaster but got cancelled as he was too left wing
chaired 1941 comittee and was the co founder of the socialist common wealth party in 1942
Political content of his broadcasts and hopes of a new and different England after the war influenced politics and helped the Labour Party gain its landslide victory in 1945 general election
1930s-priestly concerned about social inequality
1942-set up common wealth party arguing for morality and greater democracy and public ownership of land
1945-common wealth and labour merged. Developed idea of welfare state which began to be put in place at end of war
