Analysis of basic movements in sporting
examples

Flexion / extension

Frequently occurs at:

Shoulder

Hip

Knee

Elbow

Flexion - Decreasing the angle of the bones at a joint

Extension - Increasing the angle of bones at a joint

Abduction / Adduction

Occurs at the shoulder

Abduction - Movement away from the midline of the body

Adduction - Movement towards the midline of the body

Rotation

Because this is an all round circular movement there is no 'pairing' here

Rotation - Movement around an axis

Occurs at the shoulder

Plantar flexion / dorsiflexion

Occurs at the ankle

Dorsiflexion - Pulling the toes up at the ankle, decreasing the ankle angle

Plantar flexion - Pointing the toes down at the ankle, increasing the ankle angle

Specific sporting action and type of movement

Hip, knee and ankle action - Occurs in running, kicking and the standing vertical jump

Shoulder action - Occurs during cricket bowling which involves overarm rotation

elbow action - Occurs during push-ups, and taking a football throw-in
