Flexion / extension
Frequently occurs at:
Shoulder
Hip
Knee
Elbow
Flexion - Decreasing the angle of the bones at a joint
Extension - Increasing the angle of bones at a joint
Abduction / Adduction
Occurs at the
shoulder
Abduction - Movement away from the midline of the body
Adduction - Movement towards the midline of the body
Rotation
Because this is an all round circular movement there is no 'pairing' here
Rotation - Movement around an axis
Occurs at the
shoulder
Plantar flexion / dorsiflexion
Occurs at the
ankle
Dorsiflexion - Pulling the toes up at the ankle, decreasing the ankle angle
Plantar flexion - Pointing the toes down at the ankle, increasing the ankle angle
Specific sporting action and type of movement
Hip, knee and ankle action
- Occurs in running, kicking and the standing vertical jump
Shoulder action
- Occurs during cricket bowling which involves overarm rotation
elbow action
- Occurs during push-ups, and taking a football throw-in
