Puppy mills and irresponsible backyard breeders cause numerous amounts of welfare issues on their bred dogs
-
Effects
Immediate Effects
Although this may not directly affect humans does not mean we shouldn't take action in bettering the quality of life for dogs kept in puppy mills. Some causes are:
- Dogs being kept in cages for their entire lives
- Being housed in terrible conditions such as, "minimal shelter from extreme weather and no choice but to sit and sleep in their own excrement, "inadequate or unsanitary food and water," and "little or no veterinary care"
(CITE) Buyer Beware: The Problem with Puppy Mills and Backyard Breeders
Some of the immediate consequences include dogs being treated in inhumane ways. Which goes against ethics and sometimes these businesses are kept just barely legal. With the poor treatment of these dogs comes poorly bred dogs that carry poor health genetics and are sick due to housing conditions.
Remote Effects
If we continue to influence these mills and breeders it would cause an over abundance of poorly maintained animals. More and more animals end up in the pound due to consumers not being able to take care of their dogs. Many of which need close medical attention. We can't take dogs that were bred with health issues for granted. Especially if the consumer is not aware of it. Long term affects include crowding in animal shelters and pounds resulting in having to put down animals.
"When puppy mills and backyard breeders flood the market with animals, they reduce homes available for animals from reputable establishments, shelters and rescue groups. Every year, more than 150,000 cats and dogs enter shelters in Washington State-6 to 8 million animals enter shelters nationwide. Sadly, only about 15 percent of people with pets in the U.S. adopted them from a shelter or rescue group, leaving so many deserving pets left behind."CITE) Buyer Beware: The Problem with Puppy Mills and Backyard Breeders

There wouldn’t be a commercial breeding business if there weren’t people buying from them. Breeders continue because the business is still successful.
"Consumers now demand eight million dogs per year, which has reinforced breeders' beliefs that despite what activists shout at protests, the breeders are actually running businesses the public supports."

Primary causes
Puppy mills are solely created for the purpose of profit and greed. "Puppy mills maximize profits by minimizing expenses, at the ultimate expense of the animals they breed."
PUPPY MILLS
Immediate effect
Dogs in puppy mills often suffer from an array of painful and potentially life-shortening veterinary problems due to overcrowded, unsanitary conditions and the lack of proper oversight or veterinary care. Veterinary Problems in Puppy Mill Dogs

- The cost it takes to save these animals
"An internal study conducted by the Humane Society of the United States (The HSUS) in 2011 found that animal shelters and rescue groups that The HSUS worked with to help treat and place newly-rescued puppy mill dogs spent an average of $259 for veterinary expenses per dog rescued (reimbursed by The HSUS)"
