anadiplosis
Definition: repitition of the final words of a sentence or line at the beginning of the next
Example: "'Dad is funny about stuff like that and he might blame her." "Blame her! He wouldn't." (Lisle 73)
anaphora
Definition: the repititon of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses
Example: "Her coat and hat hung on a hook in the wall, as if she'd only stepped out for a moment. Her wedding chain was on display in the parlor cabinet. Her sheet music sat on the piano.." (Lisle 14)
antithesis
Definition: a contrast or opposition between two things
Example: "Chief McKenzie drew a good deal less salary than what my father makes managing the store and there were few luxuries. The only bathrooom was was downstairs off the kitchen. There was no hot water.." (Lisle 24)
asyndeton
Definition: omission of conjunctions that ordinarily join words or clauses
Example: "His father is a hands-on guy who measures industry by what he can see: gardens plowed, hedges pruned, lawns seeded." (Lisle 39)
epanalepsis
Definition: repitition after intervening words
Example: "Sometimes he did and sometiemes he didn't." (Lisle 14)
epistrophe
Definition: the repetition of a word at the end of successive clauses or sentences
"'But we've got to talk about it. That's the most intresting part, that they told us not to talk about it.'" (Lisle 62)
polysyndeton
Definition: using conjunctions in close succession, especially where some would usually be omitted
Example: "I'll be mucking and plucking and watering the flocks." (Lisle 61)
