ANAPHORA
Definition: The repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses.
Example: Page 23- "She was a careful person who tended to keep her thoughts to herself. Not that she was shy. She knew how to speak up when she wanted , even to her own father, the chief of police."
ANTITHESIS
Definition: A contrast or opposition between two things
Example: Page 49- "Though he was short, far shorter than my father, his meaty chest gave him the hunched look of a bulldog."
ASYNDETON
Definition: Omission of conjunctions that ordinarily join words or clauses.
Example: Page 39- " His dad is a hands-on guy who measures industry by what he can see: gardens plowed, hedges pruned, lawns seeded."
ANADIPLOSIS
Definition: Repetition of the final words of a sentence or line at the beginning of the next.
Example: Page 60- "What happened next? What happened was Jeddy and I couldn't leave well enough alone."
EPANALEPSIS
Definition: Repetition after intervening words.
Example: Page 56- "The Coast Guard cutter that fired on the Black Duck last Sunday, killing three men, gave a clear signal for the vessel to stop and surrender according to D.W. Hingle, commander of the Newport Coast Guard Station."
EPISTROPHE
Definition: The repetition of a word at the end of successive clauses or sentences.
Example: "We're late!" Jeddy whispered ecstatically. "Too late!" I crowed with delight.
POLYSYNDETON
Example: Page 67- "He'd had a boat and a crew and the kind of rugged strength it takes to pull a living thing from the sea.
Definition: Using conjunctions in close succession, especially where some would usually be omitted.
