Anadiplosis
Definition: Repetition of the final words of a sentence or line at the beginning of the next.
Example:
Anaphora
Definition: The repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses.
Example: "It was Marina who served us supper when Jeddy asked me to stay over evenings. It was she who washed up after, darned her father's socks, hung the landry and took it down." (pg 14.)
Asyndeton
Definition: Omission of conjunctions that ordinarily join words or clauses.
Example: "She changed the beds, swept the floors, hauled in coal for the stove." (pg. 15)
Anaphora
Definition: The repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses
Example: "'Maybe we shouldn't disturb anything.' 'Maybe not,' I said, as squeamish as he was." (pg. 18).
Epistrophe
Definition: The repetition of a word at the end of successive clauses or sentences.
Example: "I said I wouldn't mind. No, I wouldn't mind at all" (pg. 46)
Epanaepsis
Definition: Repetition after intervening words
Example: "'Always has been, always will be,' I announced." (pg. 15)
Anitithesis
Definition: A contrast of opposition between two things.
Example: "Chief McKenzie drew a good deal less salary than what my father made managing the store, and there were few luxuries." (pg. 24).
Polysyndeton
Definition: Using conjugations in close succession, especially where some would usually be omitted.
"Jeddy shook his head. 'Dad already signed me up to... I'll be mucking and plucking and watering the flocks.'" (pg. 61)
