Latin America Economies
- Mid-century: modernization and change of agrarian structures, increasing its capitalism.
- Many farmers migrated to the cities and the growth of industry caused cities to grow.
- The 50's and 80's intensified industrialization in Latin America.
- Some cities were urban complexes with few services and large masses of unemployed people.
- Large masses of the population without permanent employment.
- 1970: foreign debt grew and the oil crisis.
- Influence of ECLAC on government policies and public opinion, its aim was to modernize and industrialize agricultural production.
Insurgent Stage
- Industrial workers' organizations, allied to left-wing parties.
- In a climate of social mobilization, the guerrillas were created.
Colombia
In the 40's violence arises, there is a conflict between conservatives and liberals, General Rojas Pinilla dictatorship.
Venezuela
Marcos Pérez Jiménez comes to power in a military coup, when he leaves power the Acción Democrática and Democracia Cristiana parties rule.
Ecuador
In an economic crisis, the military takes power.

In 1952, the Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario makes an important political change.
Brazil
President Vargas did not have a good mandate and committed suicide, the military took power.

The Cuban Revolution
- In the 1950s, the revolutionary movement "26th of July" arose against the Batista dictatorship.
- Led by Fidel Castro and "Che" Guevara, they overthrew the dictatorship in 1959 with the Sierra Maestra movement.
- There were changes in agrarian reform, and they nationalized the properties of foreigners, especially Americans linked to the mafia.
- Two years later, Cuba fought with the United States, but was not invaded, so Castro allied with the USSR.
The Counterinsurgency
- Strarted the guerrilla actions.
- Havana was center of meetings of politicians, social leaders and leaders of insurrectional groups.
- USA pressure on Latin American governments to isolate Cuba, expelled from OAS, and to break relations with the USSR.
- Anti-communism in Latin America, and military dictatorships sponsored by the USA.
