Cyberstalking & Predators
Definition
Online predator
Online predators commit child sexual abuse through the internet. These predators specifically target kids and young teens by pretending to be a friend and slowly escalating their harassment.
Online predators will start out as a very sympathetic and friendly individual. Once they have gained their victim’s trust, they will eventually start to talk about sex.
Typically, they will ask for a photo and use increasing pressure to get their victim to send an explicit photo. The photo can then be used to manipulate the victim into sending more pictures.
The predator will threaten to share the photo with the victim’s friends or family. An online predator may even attempt to meet with a child in person which can result in an assault or a kidnapping.
Cyberstalking
Cyberstalkers, like cyber bullies, have 24-hour access to their victims. Cyberstalkers can show up on social media, online games, or other messaging forums.
A stalker may be a stranger that attempts to start a conversation with you online, but it can also be a person that you know that is trying to remain anonymous.
Many times, cyberstalking involves the stalker making threats to their victim in order to control or influence them.
Cyberstalking is when a person uses the internet to monitor or harass someone.
How will you know if you are being cyber stalked or harassed online?
Any messages, emails, phone calls, or other communication that are not wanted or make you feel uncomfortable can be an indication of cyberstalking.
There are two main types of cyberstalking:
The first one involves a person who immediately starts harassing you and sending you unwelcome messages.
The second one is harder to identify at first as the cyberstalker will try to be a friend and slowly builds up to harassment. In this type of cyberstalking the person may turn out to be an online predator.
