Direct and Indirect Speech
We may report what he said without quoting his exact words. This is called Reported or Indirect Speech.
We may report the words of a speaker in two ways:
a. We may quote his actual words. This is called Direct Speech.
John said that he was very busy then. (Indirect)
John said, “I am very busy now.” (Direct)
we use inverted commas to signify the exact words of the speaker.
Nivaan said that he is going to
swim at the pool. (Indirect)
Nivaan said, "Mom I am going to swim at the pool." Direct speech
Nivaan explained that his dog’s name is Rocky. (Indirect)
Nivaan said, " My dog's name is Rocky." (Direct Speech)
My mom said that she will not be home today when I get off the bus - Indirect
My mom said, " I am not going to be home today when you get off the bus." - Direct
Common changes can be:
You may need to adjust other words.
I to he/she
this to that
here to there
yesterday to the day before
today to that day
now to then
tomorrow to the following day

Direct speech uses Inverted commas and Punctuations and quoting the speaker directly
