Terminology
Aboriginal
Is the term used to refer to the original People who lived in Australia and their descedants
Should never be abbreviated, nor used as noun
Should always be an Uppercase A
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
"Torres Strait Islander" is the term that groups Peoples from a collection of small items located above northern Queensland
The cultural differences between the many Nations across the mainland and the Torres Straight Islands mean that respectful language use is a must
Indigenous
Refers to the original inhabitants of land and their descendants
Aboriginal people have previously criticised this term as it does not represent the cultural identity and diverstiy of Aboriginal peoples
Country
Is about ancestral, cultural, spiritual and social connections to land
Being on Country means that you re on traditional Aboriginal lands
Aboriginal people may belong to more than one Country or community
Caring for Country
Refers to the connection and relationship Aboriginal peoples have with their land
Forms strong identity
Kinship
A sytem of extended family that defines where a person belongs
Describes Relationships, Roles, and expectations
Keeping family connections strong is vital fro keeping Aboriginal culture alive
Culture
Refers to behaviours and customs of a communtiy or group
Consists of Country, Language, Spirituality and connection to land
It is offensive to say that Aboriginal culture are simple, primitive or native as this infers inferiority
Dreaming - Creation
Is a European concept
Describes Aboriginal worldviews and sprirituality
Dreaming - Creation stories are the base of Aboriginal Law and Culture
Do not refer to this as folklore, myth or legend
Shame
Refers to discomfort surrounding when Aboriginal Peoples are singled out
Aboriginal Peoples can also feel shame if they are praised or appear better than their community
Is real and must be respected
Deadly
A term used to mean 'excellent' or 'very good'
Impact of Colonisation
Aboringal History has not been, and continues to not be recognised by colonial history
Improving use of terminology is one way we can imporve relationships with Aboriginal Peoples
Respecting Aboriginal culture and history is jsut the beginning of reconciling the failings of the past and improving connections in the future
Gaining a better understanding of Aboriginal history and culture is very good for reconciilliation, education leads to respect

Someone who is accepted as Aboriginal by the communtity in which they have lved in or currently live in
Diversity
There are over 500 different First Nation identities in Australia
Aboriginal Peoples have the oldest continuing culture on the planet and are the owners of the oldest law and governance system
