LIFE
born in Bombay, India
sent to England at 6 to attend school and returned to India in 1882
he began to work as a journalist and to publish poems and short stories
for his short stories he used a FRAME STORY instead of the omniscient narrator technique in order to convey a more ambivalent vision of the world
1889 returned to London
he settled in the USA with his American wife
1896 returned to England
1907 - first Englishman to receive the
NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE
he worked as a correspondent during the First World War
he died in 1936 and his ashes are buried in the
Poets' Corner
in Westminster Abbey
