Hardware and operating systems
Computer language and function
When we communicate or memorise or make calculatios, we use a lot of symbols, sound and images. computers only use the numbers 1 and 0. this known as the binary system
ASCII
ASCII (the American Standard code for lnformation Interchange) uses 7 bits tu store up to 128 different characrers
computer functions
we use the name hardware from the physichal components of the computer system. software or programs refer to the data and the instructions we use to manage the data
computers carry out 4 different functions:
input of data using peripheral devices
-output of data using peripheral devices
-storing data in the storage devices
-processing data in the central processing unit (CPU), using the microprocessor and the memory
computer elements
microprocessor
the microprocessor is an integrated circuit made up of million of tiny transistors working together to process the instructions and data received from the memory
the clock rate sets the pace at which processes are completed. the clock continuosly generates electrical impulses. a 4 ghz procssor receives 4 million impulses every second
motherboard and connecting devices
all the components of the computer are connected in the motherboard
connecting external devices
memory and units of storage
ram
the computers main memory it is RAM (random acces memory)
when we run an aplication, its instruction and data are copied to this memory so that the microprocessor can use them
cache memory
RAM cannot work at the same speed that the microprocessor, so a much faster memory is instaled between the ram and the microprocessor. the cache memory stores the data that the microprocessor uses most often
ROM BIOS
when you turn your computer its checks the system. if everything is correct the bios starts the operating system in the main memory
storage devices
we use storage devices to permanently save this data
software and operating systems
programming languages
these programs can be used to create other programs and applications
operating system
manages the system resources, making them available for use by the user and the applications
