Reproductive Organs
Reproduction
Humans use sexual reproduction
Maler and females have different reproductive systems & organs
Produce different gametes (sex cells)
Fertilization
Egg (ovum) + sperm
Zygote
Embryo
Male Reproductive System
Scrotum
Testes
Sperm duct
Glands
Urethra
Penis
Foreskin
1 more item...
Used in sexual intercourse and excretion (not at the same time)
Tube inside penis that carries urine or semen (not at the same time)
Produces fluids which provide nutrients for sperm cells
Mixture of sperm and fluids called
semen
Where sperm cells pass through from testes to urethra
Millions of sperms
Male sex hormones which affect the development of body
Pouch-like sac that contains testes
Located outside of body with lower body temperature
Female Reproductive System
Ovary
Oviduct
Uterus
Cervix
Vagina
Muscular tube that leads from the cervix to the outside of the woman's body
The man's penis goes into here during sexual intercourse
Ring of muscle that allows sperm to enter uterus
Where the baby develops until birth
Connects the ovaries to the uterus
Lined with cilia which move the egg into the uterus
Contains hundreds of undeveloped egg cell
After puberty, egg is released every 28-32 days
Becoming Pregnant
Sexual intercourse
Process where male and female reproductive organs meet so that fertilization can take place
Penis in inserted into the vagina
Ejaculation
Penis pumps semen out and into the vagina
The journey of the sperm
Made in testes
Travels up the sperm duct and liquids added by glands
Semen travels out of the man through penis
Enters female through vagina and pass through cervix
Meet an egg cell in the oviduct
Sperm and egg join together called fertilisation and makes women
pregnant
After fertilization
Egg becomes a zygote
Zygote keeps dividing into a ball of cells and travel towards the uterus
Implantation
The ball of cells sink into the soft lining of the uterus
Pregnancy
Embryo continues to grow surrounded by amniotic fluid
Amnion
Bag containing amniotic fluid
Placenta
Plate-shaped organ attached to uterus lining
Supplies baby with nutrients from mother's blood and also gets rid of waste from fetus
Umbilical cord
Carries the embryo's blood to and from the placenta
O2 + H2O + food from mom's blood enter the embryo
Waste also goes from embryo's blood to the mother's
Menstrual Cycle
Last for 28-32 days
Purpose is to prepare the woman's body for a possible pregnancy
A series of events that occur in female reproductive system
Menstruation
: shedding of lining of a woman's uterus
Prepares for pregnancy
Menstrual blood is partly blood partly tissue from inside of uterus
Flows from the uterus through the cervix and out of the body through vagina
Controlled by hormones
Process
Cycle starts with uterus lining breaks down
last for 3-7 days
1 egg cell starts maturing in the beginning
takes 13 days for egg to reach maturity
A hormone is produced to stimulate the uterus to develop lining while egg cell matures
Mature egg cell released on the 14th day
Egg cell is moved along oviduct by cilia
Can be fertilized if meets a sperm
Egg cell released stays in oviduct for 24h and will disintegrate if doesn't fertilize
