TYPES OF VEGETATION
MONTANE FORESTS
Decrease in temperature and increase in altitude leads to change in natural vegetation.
Wet temperate type of forests are found b/w height of 1000 & 2000 m.
Evergreen broad leaf trees like oaks and chestnuts predominate.
Trees found b/w 1500 and 3000 m are pine, deodar, silver fir, spruce and cedar
Found in the southern slopes of the Himalayas, places having high altitude in southern and north-east India.
Alpine Vegetation
Temperate forests and grasslands more than 3600 m above sea level
Silver fir, junipers, pines & Birches
Gujjars and Bakarwals are the popular tribes
Mosses and lichens form part of Tundra Vegetation
Kashmir stag, spotted deer, wild sheep, jack rabbit, Tibetan antelope, yak, snow leopard, squirrels, Shaggy horn wild ibex, bear and rare red panda, sheep and goats
TROPICAL EVERGREEN FORESTS
Receive more than 200 cm of rainfall with a short dry season
Found in heavy rainfall areas of Western Ghats, Island groups of Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar, upper parts of Assam and Tamil Nadu coast.
Trees reach great height of up to 60m or above
Ebony, Mahogany, Rosewood, Rubber and Cinchona
Elephant, monkey, lemur, deer in jungles. One-horned rhinoceros found in Assam and West Bengal.
Plenty of birds, bats, sloth, scorpions and snails are also found.
TROPICAL DECIDUOUS FORESTS
Trees shed their leaves for about 6-8 weeks in dry summer
Rainfall between 200-100 cm.
Eastern parts of country- Northeastern states, foothills of Himalayas, Jharkhand, West Odisha & Chhattisgarh, eastern slopes of Western Ghats.
Teak, bamboo, sal, shisham, sandalwood, khair, kusum, arjun, mulberry
Dry Deciduous Forests
Rainfall b/w 100-70 cm.
Found in rainier parts of the Peninsular plateau and plains of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh
Teak, sal, peepal and neem
Lion, tiger, pig, deer, elephant, huge variety of birds, lizards, snakes and tortoises
MANGROVE FORESTS
Found on coasts influenced by tides where mud and silt accumulate
Their roots are submerged under water.
Sundari trees found in Ganga- Brahmaputra delta provide durable timber
Palm, Coconut, keora, agar etc.
Royal Bengal Tiger, Turtles, crocodiles, gharials and snakes
THORN FORESTS AND SCRUBS
Less than 70 cm of rainfall
Found in north-western parts of the country + semi-arid areas of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
Acacias, palms, euphorbias and cacti
Trees have long roots penetrating deep to get moisture.
Stems are succulent to conserve water.
Leaves are thick and small to minimise evaporation
Rats, mice, rabbits, fox, wolf, tiger, lion, wild ass, horses and camels.
