3Ds - delirium, dementia, depression
Delirium
- sudd onset, last hrs to mths (dependent on speed of diagnosis)
- thinking fluctuates btw lucid & disorganised, impaired conciousness & attention, recent & immediate memory impaired
- likely to experience frightening or paranoid hallucinations or delusions
- disturbed sleep, often involving reversal of sleep-wake cycle
Dementia
- last for yrs, w most types gradually progressing until death
- gradual loss of range of cognitive abilities, including memory, thinking, reasoning
- hallucination & delusions can be present, particularly in Lewy-body dementia, misperceptions are more common
- normal sleep
Depression
- can last several mths to yrs (especially of not treated), progression can be gradual or rapid
- low mood, may make no attempt to use abilities, indecisive, some memory impairment
- hallucinations or delusions can be present in severe depression
- disturbed sleep
What is dementia?
- decline in person's cognitive/ intellectual abilities
- eg. memory, language, understanding, reasoning & problem solving, concentration
- decline affects person's ability to function in daily life
In SG, 1 in 10, >60yrs suffer from dementia
- not part of growing old but caused by damage to brain cells
