german reactions and criticism of tov
non-representation
germans angry as their government was not represented at peace talks
forced to accept harsh terms without any choice or even comment
germans did not feel as if they had lost the war therefore why were they being treated as a defeated country
14 points and league of nations
treatment of germany was not in keeping with wilsons fourteen points as whilst self determination was given to countries such as estonia, latvia and lithuania germany not offered this
anschluss with austria forbidden
german speaking people were being hived off into new countries such as czechslovakia - ruled by non germans
germany further insulted by not being invited to join the league of nations
disarmament
germany felt these terms were unfair
army of 100,000 was small for a country of germany's size - army was a symbol of german pride
despite wilsons 14 points calling for disarmament none of allied forced were being instructed of forced to do the same
war guilt and reparations
war guilt cause particularly hated germans did not feel they had started war - they felt at very least blame should be shared
bitter that germany was expected to pay for all damage caused by the war even though german economy was severely weakened
german territories
major blow to german pride and economy due to quantity of land taken away
both the saar and upper silesia were important industrial areas
as germany was loosing colonies the british and french were increasing empires by taking control of german territories in africa
