Exercise and Immune Health with Ageing (Duggal et al., 2018)
Duggal et al. (2018)
This study investigated immune profiles of highly physically active, non-elite older individuals (master cyclists) vs. age-matched younger adults not involved in regular exercise.
-
Participants
125 amateur non-elite cyclists ages 55-79 (84 males, 41 females)
-
75 clinically healthy older invidious aged 50-80 years (43 males, 31 females) who were not involved in regular intense exercise.
55 healthy young individuals ages 20-36 years (30 males, 25 females) who were not involved in regular intense exercise.

Results: Cytokines
IL-6 induces anti-inflammatory effects after exercise, but when chronically evaluated in ageing, can lead to atrophy of the thymus.
-
-
Physical activity in older age reduced IL-6 and maintained higher iL-7 and IL-15, this protecting the immune system,
-
Limitations
Cell frequency, not cell number was evaluated
-
-
No other confounding variables accounted for - sleep, nurtirtion, anxiety levels etc.
