TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS
Combustion
carbon containing compounds, fuel burns in oxygen from the air to produce carbon dioxide, CO2, Water and heat or flame.
C3H8 5O2 > 3CO2 + 4H2O
CH4 + 2O2 > CO2 + 2H2O
Decomposition
a single coompound is broken down into two or more simpler substances
CaCO3 > CaO + CO2
2NaN3 > 2Na + 3N2
Ni(HCO3) > NiCO3 + H2O + CO2
Neutralization
it is the reaction of an acid and base
HX + BOH > BX + HOH
H2SO4 + 2KOH > K2SO4 + 2H2O
Single-Replacement
it is a reaction in which a more active metal displaces another less active metal in a compound.
2Na + 2H2O > 2NaOH + H2
Ca + 2H2O > Ca(OH)2 + H2
Fe + 2HCI > FeCl2 + H2
Combination
it is a reaction in which simpler substances are combined into a more complex compound
S + O2 > SO2
2 Li + Br2 > 2 LiBr
Mg + O2 > MgO
Double-Replacement**
**
two ionic compounds in aqueous solution switch anions and produce an insoluble substance.
NaCI + LiNO3 > NaNO3 + LiCI
BaCl2 + K2CrO4 > BaCrO4 + 2KCI
