TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS
Combination Reaction
Two or more compounds combine to form one compound.
C + O2 → CO2
H2O + SO3 → H2SO4
2H2 + O2 → 2H2O
Decomposition Reactions
A complex molecule breaks down to make simpler ones.
H2CO3 → H2O + CO2
CaCO3 → CaO + CO2
2AgBr → 2Ag + Br2
Single Displacement Reaction
A single element replaces a similar element of an adjacent reactant compound.
Zn + CuSO4 → ZnSO4 + Cu
Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl2 + H2
Cl2 + 2NaBr → 2NaCl + Br2
Double Displacement Reaction
Two ionic compounds exchange ions, producing 2 new ionic compounds.
NaCl + AgNO3 → NaNO3 + AgCl
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O
BaCl2 + MgSO4 → BaSO4 + MgCl2
Combustion Reaction
A single element or compound combines with oxygen gas releasing energy. This rapid oxidation is called burning.
CH4 + O2 → CO2 + H2O
C4H10 + O2 → CO2 + H2O
C3H7OH + O2 → CO2 + H2O
Acid-Base Reaction
An acid and a base react with each other. Generally, the product of this reaction is a salt and water.
H2SO4 + CaO → CaSO4 + H2O
H2SO4 + Ca(OH)2 → CaSO4 + 2 H2O
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O
