Types of Chemical Reactions
Decomposition
A single compound is broken down into two or more simpler substances.
CaCO3 --> CaO + CO2
2 NO2 --> 2 O2 + N2
2 HgO --> 2Hg + O2
Single displacement
It is a reaction in which a more active metal displaces another less active metal in a compound.
Pb + FeSO4 --> PbSO4 + Fe
2AgNO3 + Cu --> Cu(NO3)2 + 2 Ag
Fe + 2HCl --> FeCl2 + H2
Combination
(synthesis reactions)
It is a reaction in which simpler substances are combined into a more complex compound.
P4 + 3 O2 --> 2 P2O3
2 C5H5 + Fe --> Fe(C5H5)2
2 Mg + O2 --> 2 MgO
Acid-base
(neutralization reaction)
-A neutralization reaction is the reaction of an
acid and a base.
Reaction produces a salt and water.
Mg(OH)2 + H2SO4 --> MgSO4 + 2 H2O
KOH + HCl --> KCl + H2O
H2SO4 + 2KOH --> K2SO4 + 2 H2O
Double displacement
Two ionic compounds in aqueous solution switch anions and produce an insoluble substance.
Na3PO4 + 3KOH --> 3 NaOH + K3PO4
MgCl2 + Li2CO3 --> MgCO3 + 2 LiCl
2 RbNO3 + BeF2 --> Be(NO3)2 + 2 RbF
Combustion
Carbon containing compounds, fuel burns in oxygen from the air to produce carbon dioxide, CO2 , water, H2O, and heat or flame.
C6H12 + 9 O2 --> 6 CO2 + 6 H2O
P4 + 3 O2 --> 2 P2O3
C3H6O + 4 O2 --> 3CO2 + 3 H2O
