The Chilean process
The socialist Salvador Allende won the presidency. Allende began a government of great transformations and re-vindication of the sovereignty of Chile. The "Chilean road to socialism" was profoundly democratic. In 1973, a military coup overthrew President Allende and he died. A dictatorship led by Augusto Pinochet was established, it was characterized by the harshest repression.

Central America
The United States had influence in the Central American countries. Social upheaval and popular advances led to more frequent interventions by military dictatorships. The popular response was the agitation and action of guerrilla movements. Nicaragua, a country dominated by a few families, including the Somoza, which maintained a succession of bloody dictatorships. They built the "Sandinista National Liberation Front."
