Pathophysiology of Acute Coronary Syndrome
Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS)
Deposition of atherosclerotic plaques in the heart arteries.
Reduction in blood flow into the heart muscle areas / cardiomyocytes
Non modifiable factors: Age and family history
Poor oxygen supplies to the cardiomyocytes
Angina / Chest Pain
a) Stable Angina
Only occurs during exertion
High oxygen demand & blood supply need
b) Unstable Angina
Occurs during exertion and resting
Rapture of the atherosclerotic plaque
Thrombosis
Incomplete occlusion in the blood vessel
Myocardial ischaemia and infarction
Non STEMI (Non ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction)
Reduced blood flow to the cardiomyocytes
Further buildup of atherosclerotic plaque
Rapture of the plaque
Total/Complete occlusion in the blood vessel
No oxygen supply to the cardiomyocytes
Death/Necrosis of cardiomyocytes
STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction)
Myocardial ischaemia and infarction
A syndrome characterized by a reduction or occlusion of blood supplies to the heart.
