cordelias death
Animalistic imagery- Lear’s repetition of “howl” shows how he is reduced to the status and form of an animal without his daughter and cannot verbalise his grief. This imagery returns to its negative connotations (after being used hopefully with “birds”), reinforcing the shattered hope created at the start of this scene as there is a return to chaos and tragedy.

cord/lear in prison
-
Tragic victim (Cordelia): “For thee, oppresséd King, I am cast down”
Only time in play when God in the Bible is referred to (in a speech radiating forgiveness and trust): “As if we were God’s spies”
Prop: “Come hither, captain. Hark (gives First Captain a document)”
Edgar arrives in disguise and gives a letter to Albany, telling him to open it before the battle. When he reads it, sound the trumpet, and a champion will come forth to prove the truth of the letter. (5;1)
Edmund tells Albany they should get ready to fight.
Edmund stays on stage and mulls over his situation: he is happy to marry either sister, and will let them get rid of Albany after the battle. Edmund will take Lear and Cordelia prisoner and execute them before Albany can pardon them. (5;1)
