Combustion Reactions
A substance reacts with oxygen from the air and transfers energy to the surroundings as light and heat.
C3H6O + 4 O2 → 3 CO2 + 3 H2O
Must involve oxygen as a reactant.
C6H12 + 9 O2 → 6 CO2 + 6 H2O
C10H8 + 12 O2 → 10 CO2 + 4 H2O
Combination Reactions
P4 + 3 O2 → 2 P2O3
2 C5H5 + Fe → Fe(C5H5)2
Two or more reactants combine to form a single prodcut.
2 Mg + O2 → 2 MgO
Single Displacement Reactions
A single-replacement reaction occurs when one element replaces another element in a compound.
Fe(s) + 2 HCI (aq) → FeCI2 (aq) + H2 (g)
2 Na(s) + 2 H2O (I) → 2 NaOH (aq) + H2 (g)
Ca(s) + 2 H2O (I) → Ca(OH)2 (aq) + H2(g)
Decomposition Reactions
A single compound is broken down into two or more simpler substances.
CaCO3 → CaO + CO2
O3 → O + O2
2 NO2 → 2 O2 + N2
Double Displacement Reactions
Two ionic compounds in aqueous solution switch anions and produce an insoluble substance.
Na3PO4 + 3 KOH → 3 NaOH + K3PO4
2 Mgl2 + Mn(SO3)2 → 2 MgSO3 + Mnl4
MgCI2 + Li2CO3 → MgCO3 + 2 LiCI
Neutralization Reactions
HX + BOH → Bx + HOH
H2SO4 (aq) + 2 KOH (aq) → K2SO4 (aq) + 2 H2O (I)
A neutralization reaction is the reaction of an acid and base.
A neutralization reaction produces a salt and water.
2 KOH + H2SO4 → K2SO4 + 2 H2O
