REACT Study
Rationale
-
2.5% annual decline in lower limb functional ability within 4 years of follow-up (Fox et al., 2014)
Background
What we know
Strong evidence for the impact of exercise on slowing or preventing disability in later life (Pahor et al., 2014)
What we DON'T know
Effectiveness and value for money for long-term community-based exercise programmes targeting lower limb physical function.
-
Aim
To establish whether community-based, group exercise and health behavioural maintenance intervention could prevent decline in physical functioning in older adults already at increase risk of mobility limitations.
-
Design (Stathi & Withall, 2018)
A 2 arm, multi-centre randomised controlled trail.
-
-
Focus
Create a cost-effective, 12-month, group-based exercise protocol to improve ambulatory function in individuals at risk of mobility disability.
Deliverable on scale, at low cost, basic requirement for space, with no access to free-weight/fixed resistance machines.
