Physical Activity Intervention
People with MS
12-weel internet-based intervention.
Intervention 1
12-week internet intervention, text and videos.
Videos - discussions about PA and experiences of becoming physically active.
4 modules
Getting started
- benefits of exercise, instruction for self-monitoring, information about becoming more physically active.
Planning for success
- goal setting and feedback, outcome expectation and self-efficacy.
Beating the odds
- overcoming barriers and social support.
Sticking with it
- maintaining physically active lifestyle and relapse prevention.
Intervention 2
7 1-t-1 video coaching sessions
Rapport building, update and discussion about progress, discussion of website content, information about adverse events.
Self-monitoring and goal setting
Daily record of steps logbook, weekly online.
Programme to help with goal setting.
Adaptation of Intervention
Extend to 6 months
More interactive video materials (instead of text) based on
e-learning principles
PA tracker feature.
1-to-1 video coaching.

Getting started, planning for success, beating the odds and sticking with it.
Content Accessible

Participants
People with MS:
Physician's approval for PA
Relapse-free in last 30 days.
Ability to walk without assisted device.
Miniamal risk for engaging in PA.
Exclusion those who did >30 mins of MVPA >2 days/week.
After baseline assessments, participants matched on step count and disability - randomly allocated to intervention or waiting list control group.
Outcome Measures
Physical activity
- Godin Leisure-Time exercise questionnaire and accelerometer.
Fatigue
- FSS and multidimensional fatigue questionnaire.
Anxiety and Depression
hospital anxiety and depression scale.
Pain
- McGill Pain Questionnaire
Sleep
- Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index
Health-related quality of life
- MS impact scale, and physical and psychological QoL
Disability
- PDDs
Physical Activity
Significant increase in self-reported PA.
Trend towards increase in MVPA.
Summary
Intervention improved self-reported PA.
Marginal effect on objective PA.
Benefits on fatigue, anxiety and depression.
Promising effects for body composition.
