The tools that make up this educational strategy are, on the one hand, storage utilities for learning on the Internet, for the presentation of content (texts, animations, graphics, videos). And on the other, synchronous or asynchronous communication tools between students or between students and course tutors (email, chat, forums, blogs, wikis).
But, beyond the busy tools, e-Learning, like any educational process, requires a solid instructional or instructional design. And that takes into account, in addition to pedagogical considerations, the advantages and limitations of the Internet and the behavior of its users.
Until a few years ago, e-learning stood out for its "Just in time" training proposal, for lowering training costs, and for being able to take place anytime, anywhere.
At present, the concept of education through technological tools is being passed to tutoring with technological support, enhancing the pedagogical work of tutors and teachers to build knowledge.
When the practice is carried out mainly occupying the Internet, we speak of pure e-Learning or online. And when it is carried out under an instructive design that mixes classes and face-to-face pedagogical activities with classes and activities 100% online, the term b-learning is used (for “blended learning” or blended learning).
What is e-learning?
E-learning, also called "virtual teaching", are totally remote situations developed through telematic networks. Human Capital Solutions on its page conceptualizes e-learning as: “education available through technology”.
The article “e-learning, the future of distance education”, conceptualizes e-learning as follows: “By definition, e-Learning is the provision of educational programs and learning systems through electronic means.
E-Learning is based on the use of a computer or other electronic device (for example, a mobile phone) to provide people with educational material.
Distance education created the bases for the development of e-Learning, which solves some difficulties in terms of time, synchronization of agendas, assistance and travel, typical problems of traditional education ”.
Technologically, ICTs are the support of this new concept of education. On the other hand, he talks about it as a use. A formative use "a source of services to achieve its formative mission". Furthermore, etymologically, e-learning is electronic learning: any training process that uses any type of ICT. From this point of view, teachers have been making use of e-learning since the inclusion of audio, visual and audiovisual devices.
It is based on three fundamental criteria:
- E-learning works in a network, which makes it capable of being instantly updated, stored, retrieved, distributed and allows the sharing of instruction or information.
- It is delivered to the end user through the use of computers using standard Internet technology.
- It focuses on the broader vision of learning that goes beyond traditional training paradigms ”.
