3.Provisional Government And The Bolshevik Revolution
PROVISIONAL GOVERMENT
weaknesses
key areas of the government that the provisional government had no control over because it answered to the Petrograd Soviet
the railway and post services they had no control over which made it harder for the government to increase the transport of food to the cities
Petrograd Soviet had the final say in all military matters which damaged authority, order number 1
government could not work effectively if its orders were only followed if another organisation gave its permission
was made up of deputies who had been elected to the duma but that had happened under the tsar
mistakes
was desperate to carry on with the war as if Russia pulled out other countries may turn away from them
however most people wanted the war to end
delayed elections and this like like they were trying to stay in power without being elected
allowed more freedom of speech which meant it was legal to hold meetings and set up political parties allowed people to openly criticise the government
Alexander Kerensky decided to launch a major offensive cin June 1917 but over 2 million soldiers were deserted
delayed land reforms which meant they did not have the support of peasants
ACTIVITIES AND LENIN AND ThE BOLSHEVIKS
Lenin Returns
had been in exile for 10 years but when he arrived home on the 3rd April 1917 he was met by crowds of supporters
he had to convince Germany to let him through as they were worried about Lenin encouraging Revolution but because Lenin wanted to end the war he was let through
April Theses
4th April
a campaign to end the war "PEACE, LAND, BREAD"
land lords estate oil be given to the peasants and an end to co-operation with the Provisional Government "ALL POWER TO THE SOVIETS"
Growing Support
by June 1917 Bolshevik papers appeared in most cities and Lenin's April theses outlined a clear strong message
Germany secretly sent money to pay for their activities
were successful in recruiting workers to join the Red Guards
The July Days
3rd - 7th July
bread rationing continued and the war was using up vital food and fuel. this caused uprisings and marchers as workers and soviets called for all power to the soviets. Petrograd soviet did not support the demonstration
the Provisional Government launched the june offensive which was a disaster as the Russian front collapsed and the army was pushed back
5th July the Bolshevik headquarters were surrounded
The Kornilov Revolt
Kornilov was appointed by Kerensky as commander in chief and he wanted to introduce martial laws. Kerensky fires him
Kornilov sends troops to the Petrograd Soviet on 24th August to shut it down but the Red Guard had kept their weapons and were able to hold them off
THE BOLSHEVIK TAKEOVER
key events
Lenin secretly returns to Russia 10th October and puts forward the idea of an armed takeover from the provisional government which he believes is about to collapse
rumours spread of Bolshevik takeover and Kerensky tried to send Bolshevik influenced armies to Petrograd but the Petrograd Soviet claimed that Kerensky was planning another counter-revolutionary attack
Kerensky tries to stop Bolseviks by closing their newspapers and called for the arrest of the military revolutionary comittee. Trotsky who was now leader of the Petrograd Soviet used the MRC to control roads and Chanel bridges
24-25th October the Red Guard seizes key areas and Bolshevik soldiers storm the Winter Palace and arrest the remaining members of the Provisional Government

the role of Lenin
changed the Bolshevik party views and his personality and clear thinking shaped the outcome of events
introduced the April Theses and slogans. Convinced other Bolsheviks that it was the right time to seize power
Failures of the Provisional of Government
the Kornilov revolt and the June offensive weakened the Provisonl Government
peasants were seizing land all over Russia
Germany was advancing into Russia and there was danger of Petrograd being captures
