Effects Of The First World War On Russia

loss of overseas market
foreign trade was blocked by enemies which caused a rapid decrease in the number of jobs in the city. Russia were unable to get raw material to keep production up and 100,000 workers lost their job in just three months
social factors
there were famines and working class struggled to buy food. the middle - class lost savings
loss of men
at first the Russian pole were patriotic and supported war effort bu as the so many began to lose loved ones the population became angry
money
17 billion roubles were spent on the war effort and the state didn't have enough money so taxes increase, international debt and inflation rose
labour
15 million men were sent off to fight which caused over 500 factories to close, there wasn't enough labour leaving fields without crops and many jobs were lost
inflation
working class were unable to afford food as inflation increased faster then wages, government start printing more money and bank savings were lost as the government tried to solve all their problems by printing more money
Nicholas decision to command
in August 1915 Nicholas takes control of the army and navy which meant the Russian population could blame the war entirely on him
The Influence of Rasputin
Rasputin
was born in Siberia and gained a reputation within the Orthodox Church and outside of it. In 1906 he was introduced to Nicolas and the peasants regarded him as one of their own
Tsarina
was in control as Nicolas decided to tale control of the army. she had become obsessed with Rasputin's healing powers and this relationship weekend her authority
Influence on Alexandra
prince had been born with a disease called haemophilia and it seemed that Rasputin had healed him so Alexandra begins to take his advice and appointed new ministers
opposition to Rasputin and Alexandra
hated by the royal court and many cartoons represents him as the real ruler with Nicholas and Alexandra as his puppets
rumours were spread that he was deliberately making Russia lose the war and they owe was having affairs with aristocratic ladies
murder of Rasputin
was murdered by a group of aristocrats in December 1916 and although the Tsarina was upset in the streets the public were rejoicing
The February Revolution 1917
causes
the tsar was away in Petrograd as he had taken over the army
there were food shortages and there was an announcement of food rationing as a protest was taking place
Industrial workers had continued to endure terrible working conditions
The International Women's day March was taking place which meant thousands were already on the streets protesting as well as demonstrations supporting the Dumas
unusaully mild weather so more people were willing to come out and support
the army that was sent to control the protests began to mutiny (the Pavlovsky Regiment)
abdication of the tsar
tsar ordered troops to be sent to the capital to enforce order but as he decided to travel back to Petrograd his plan was failing
on the 2nd March senior army officers and members urged Nicholas to abdicate in order to save Russia from desructio
Nicholas agreed to abdicate in favour of his brother but Michael didn't want to accept as he was worried revolution would turn into a civil war
after 300 years of Romanov rule, Russia became a republic in Spring 1917
