Outcome Measures: Assessment
Understanding the HOW of the study
Make sure you assess each component of the intervention.
Activity component
- aerobic exercise, resistance training, yoga, walking, physical activity etc.
Behaviour changes
- how is the participant supported to engage and adhere to the programme?
Attendance and adherence
Participant characteritics
Age, gender, morbidities etc.
Physical Activity Assessment
Subjective
Self-reported questionnaires
Recall interviews
Diary
Objective
Pedometer/accelerometer
HR monitor
Doubly labelled water.
Questionnaires
International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ)
(Craig et al., 2003)
7-day recall
(Sallis et al., 1985)
CHAMPS Physical Activity Questionnaire
(Stewart et al., 2001)
Physical Activity Scale for Elderly (PASE)
(Washburn et al., 1993)
Godin Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire
(Godin & Shepard, 1985)
Paffenbarger Physical Activity Survey
(Paffenbarger et al., 1987)
Activity Monitors
(Dishman et al., 2014)
HR Monitor
Association between oxygen consumption and HR in lab setting, not necessarily the same in real life.
Other factors can influence HR.
Pedometer
Step count, easy to use, validity and reliability ok/questionnable.
Good for motivation.
Accelerometer
Frequency and intensity of movement (sedentary, light, moderate, vigorous physical activity, sleep).
Need software and expertise.
ActivPal
Monitor to measure sedentary behaviour.
Pre-Exercise Test Health Screening
Past medical history.
Physical examination:
HR, BP, serological tests.
Cardiorespiratory Fitness Assessment
(Dishman et al., 2014)
Maximal Test: Exercise Tolerance Test
Graded exercise on bike or treadmill until exhaustion or other indication.
Submaximal Test
Use physiological responses to a certain workload to extrapolate expected VO2max.
