Great Britain triumphed in the world war, yet lost its colonial empire, the largest in the world. India, Burma, Malaysia, and Singapore became non-dependent. Most of these remained as "domains", that is, with the formal figure of the Queen of England as patron of state, as in the Canadian, Australian and New Zealand situation.
