CHAPTER 5 (STRESS & SPORT PERFORMANCE)
DEFINITION OF STRESS
anxious or threatening feeling
person experiences when he or she interprets a situation as being more than his or her psychological resources can deal with
GENERAL ADAPTATION SYNDROME
The alarm stage
the body is stimulated for the fight-or-flight response
The resistance stage
is characterized by the body’s reaction to continued stress, when it adopts strategies to deal with it.
The exhaustion stage
is the body’s reaction to long term, continuous stress, and leads to a breakdown of internal organs
IDENTIFICATION OF SYMPTOMS
Physiological symptoms
are stress includes the experience of nervousness, tensed muscles, and cold and wet hands
Behavioral symptoms
are stress includes lack of sleep, loss of appetite, alcohol and drug abuse, excessive drinking of coffee
Cognitive symptoms
are stress includes a positive athlete who suddenly becomes negative thinking, lethargic, complaints and negative about sports.
Emotional symptoms
are stress includes depression, sadness, irritation, crying

SELF-MONITORING OF STRESS
:
responsible for monitoring their own stress
levels and learn to detect and monitor them and set
them at levels appropriate for them.
ii)
STRESS INOCULATION TRAINING
:
using stress as a cure to deal with serious forms of stress, through inoculation.
iii)
RELAXATION TECHNIQUE
progressive muscular relaxation, breathing control, Imagery, Mental reprogramming
Two other relaxation techniques are
Biofeedback therapy
(electronic sensors) that allows people to achieve some amount of control over the way their bodies work or react to stress.
Autogenic training
it involves the use of the mind to influence the body to balance the self-regulative systems that control physiologicalfunctioning of the body
