Right after making a terrible journey, Saul was ripped away from his grandmother, who I perceive to be the one closest to him at the time, and was driven off to a residential school. The car trip to the school marks the change from his old life, to his new one. I think he probably felt unprepared, powerless, lonely, scared, uncertain, and sad, along with many other negative things. He was about to be instantly thrown into a world of extreme racism and abuse, barely being able to cope with the grief of losing his family, especially his grandmother. Without being able to properly process trauma and negative experiences, it is no wonder this unresolved trauma would linger his whole life. This just makes me wonder how different Saul's life would have looked if him and his grandmother has made it to Minoose in Minaki.
