- - - - Go, Went, Gone: In Go, Went, Gone, Richard begins the novel very separated and isolated from what is going on in his community and the people there that need help. He ignores a refugee protest and only initially interviews them to understand their stories that he is infatuated with. However, a change occurs within Richard as he grows to care deeply about the refugees he's interviewing and even finds a place for over 100 of them to live.
        
        The inevitability of change
        
        Exit West: In Exit West, Nadia and Saeed begin the novel isolated from the chaos around them, only really caring about each other. As the novel progresses, the two learn the importance of not isolating and building a community that all people can peacefully exist in. As the world around them changes, Nadia and Saeed's relationship also changes as they drift apart naturally.
        
        Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead: In this novel, Janina is a believer in the idea that what goes out in the universe has a ripple effect and that other’s actions will inevitably circle back to their original source in time. The idea that things in life might change naturally but the consequences of actions remain tied to their source motivates Janina to make the actions that she chooses to make in this novel, including killing multiple men.
      - This Mournable Body: Although Tambu's worldview was initially heavily influenced by the Global North that colonized Zimbabwe and made her believe that her body and other's like her's were "mournable" and worth little if not profitable, by the end of the book Tambu understands that being in solidarity with the women like her makes them all valuable to each other, and that's what matters most.
- - - - Dominance of the oppressed by a select few
        
        The Vegetarian: In The Vegetarian, the protagonist Yeong-he is constantly faced with oppression because of the men in her life that strive to have dominance over her. Yeong-he doesn't even have her own narration in this novel. When Yeong-he decides to go vegetarian, she is met with anger by her husband and dad because they can't think beyond the rigid structure that define a woman's place in society. She is also raped by her brother-in-law, who doesn't see her as anything more than an artistic object. In response to these traumatic experiences, Yeong-he isolates herself from the oppressive society that she lives in to the extent of striving to become a plant, free from the burden of harming anything.
        
        Hollow people
        
        Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead: In this novel, Janina is spurred into the desire to be a voice for the voiceless animals after she finds out her dog was killed by hollow men who only cared about taking as much as they could from nature. Janina feels a sense of solidarity with the animals as she advocates for them and takes revenge on the men who killed her dog in protest.
        
        Kafka on the Shore: In Kafka on the Shore, Oshima describes hollow people to be people who are not able to be open-minded about situations. These people lack the ability to change the rigid structures in their brains that give them a finite understanding of how the world works.
