The Rise of Arabs
-A movement of identity and revindication achieved the independence and regrouping of several countries.
-Iraq and Iran emerged.
-EGYPT Gamal Abdel Nasser proclaimed a nationalist republic in Egypt.
-The Arab League was formed for cooperation and defense purposes of the oil exploited by European and North American companies.
Economic Growth
USA- Marshall Plan to revive European economies, AIM: to prop up capitalism and prevent the influence of communism
People's Republic of China
-Economic intervention of the Western powers
-Japanese invasion
-Civil war
-Chiang Kai-shek vs. Mao Zedong.
-MAO: resisted the Japanese invaders and promised to redistribute land to the peasants.
-1949 "People's Republic of China" was proclaimed and Mao became the president.
THE COLD WAR
There was the arms race The USSR had the atomic bomb a few years later. The US built the hydrogen bomb, the Soviets did too later A nuclear arsenal was built up that could destroy the world in a few hours.
ZIONISM
In 1947 un approved dividing Palestine into two territories: Palestine for the Arabs and Israel for the Jews.
1947: Israel expanded its territory through war. Since then there are clashes between: Israel, supported by the USA and Palestine, supported by the Arabs.
An Ideological Conflic
USSR advocated a centralized economy and collective ownership
USA defended capitalism with an open economy.
BERLIN WALL
The Communist government of the German Democratic Republic (GDR, or East Germany) began to build a wall between East and West Berlin.
CUBA:
1962 - the USSR had installed rockets that could reach US territory, there was a crisis that was close to the war.
VIETNAM:
-The forces of North Vietnam and the Viet Cong led by Ho Chi Min.
-1975: United States lost and withdrew its troops.
-Few weeks later the country was unified with non-communist government.
KOREAN:
NORTH: communist supported by the USSR
SOUTH: capitalist, supported by the United States
