At the end of the novel, Emma realizes that her life will never be what she wants. She spent all of the family's money, all of her affairs have failed, and the rest of the town has realized that she has been unfaithful. "Every smile concealed the yawn of boredom, every joy a malediction, every satisfaction brought its nausea, and even the most perfect kisses only leave upon the lips a fantastical craving for the supreme pleasure." She was supremely unhappy with her life and thus ended up committing suicide.
