Social Cognitive Learning Theory (SCLT)
Strengths of SCLT
Focused on important human social behavior and social implications
Addresses reinforcement and punishment, with self-efficacy and motivation
Concerned on learning and self-regulation
An evolving theory that are comprehensive and open to change
4 Phenomena on SCLT
Response inhibition effect
Response facilitation effect
Response disinhibition effect
Observational learning effect
Limitation of SCLT
Reduce human behavior down to individual processes such as memory and attention.
Assumes that changes in the environment will automatically lead to changes in the person.
The approach is too mechanical that it compares computer and humans have similar processes, which is not.
Focuses mainly on individual and ignore social differences.
Definition,Bandura's Basic Assumptions and Internal Principle
Definition = Learning theory which states that people acquire new behaviors by observing a model, and that personal (or cognitive) factors, the behavior itself, and the environment (in the form of reinforcements) are engaged in a triadic feedback relationship, called reciprocal determinism, which influences the reproduction of the learned behavior.
Bandura's Basic Assumptions
= People can learn by observing others
= Learning is an internal process that may or may not result in a behavior change
= Learning can occur without a change in behavior
= Behavior is directed toward particular goals
= Behavior eventually becomes self-regulated
= Cognition plays a role in learning
Internal Principle/ Reciprocal Determinism = Behavior, Personal Factors and Environmental Factors
Expectations about future consequences affect how we cognitively process of new information
Expectations affect decisions about how to behave
Vicarious experiences of others’ consequences
Nonoccurrence of expected consequences have effects
Expectations of future consequences & responses based on current situation
