PAST PAPER QUESTION: THE RISE OF COMMUNISM, THE CONSERVATIVE ELITE, THE GREAT DEPRESSION AND THE REORGANISATION ARE ALL FACTORS THAT HELPED HITLER RISE TO POWER IN JANUARY 1933? WHICH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT
-
THE CONSERVATIVE ELITE
NAZI ADVANTAGE
therefore Hitler became chancellor not because he ever won a majority but because of the 'behind the scenes' of Von Papen, Hindenburg and Schliecher
30th Jan 1933 Hindenburg - advised by Von Papen- appoints Hitler as chancellor with Von Papen as hive vice-chancellor

THE GREAT DEPRESSION
SOCIAL PROBLEMS
to many GM's it seemed that the Weimar government was making a hopeless mess of handling the situation
to many GM's it seemed that the Weimar government was making a hopeless mess of handling the situation
-
the extremist parties claimed they could solve all the problems→the communists said that the depression showed the capitalist system was doomed and that only communism was the answer
the nazi's blamed the weimar republic, the treaty of versailles, the marxists and the jews and promised to get rid of the 'enemy within' who was destroying GMY
as extremism increased so did political violence. nazi and communists regularly fought battles→ 500 were killed or seriously wounded in a 7 week frenzy of political fighting in 1932-the town halls were bombed by farmers
ECONOMIC PROBLEMS
the GM people had judged the country on its economic success so if the economy was failing then so must the country be
The weimar gov seemed to have no idea what to do about the problems of the rising unemployment and growing poverty
-
-
NAZI ADVANTAGE
the depression was a gift to Hitler and the Nazi's. for every problem the Nazi's had an explanation or a promise
the weimar government is weak: you need strong leadership→ Hitler should lead- delivering powerful and moving speeches to big crowds showed him as strong and powerful and Hitler seemed just what GMY needed to get through the depression
-
worried about the communists: look at the Nazi's SA→ they were the only people who knew how to deal with them
the nazi's 25 points were very attractive to the most vulnerable to the depression: the unemployed, elderly and middle class
Hitler offered them culprits to blame for GMY's problems like the allies, the November criminals and the jews
-
in the 1930 elections the nazi's got 107 seats
in 1932 they got nearly 200 but they did not have the majority→ still the biggest single party
THE REORGANISATION
-
AGGRESIVE METHODS
THE SA
In 1921, he set up his own private army called the SA.
Led by Ernst Röhm from 1931 to 1934, it was distinctly separate from the German army and often used street violence to intimidate Nazi opposition.
Quickly growing in numbers due to the Great Depression, the SA was much larger than the army and likely was made up of about 2,000,000 men
