Properties & Metals
Non-Ferrous Metals
Lead
Properties: Extremely soft, Heavy, Malleable and corrosion- resistant.
Applications:Roofs,Tank Linings,Alloyed with tin to make a range of soft solders
Copper
Properties:Very ductile and malleable, good conductor of heat and electricity, corrosion-resistant
Applications: Electrical wire and cable, Water pipes, Soldering Iron Bits.
Aluminum
Properties:Soft,Light,Malleable and Corrosion-Resistant
Applications: Aircraft and motor vehicles components, Kitchen utensils, ladders, overhead electrical cables.
Ferrous Metals
Cast Iron
-
Properties:Weak in tension but strong, tough in compression, very fluid when molten. Some of carbon content visible as graphite makes it self lubricant.
Applications:Machine beds, brake drums, engine cylinder blocks and cylinder heads, valve bodies, manhole covers.
Mild Steel
Properties: Strong, Fairly Malleable,Ductile
Applications:wire,rivets,nuts and bolts
-
Stainless steel
Properties:Corrosion-resistant, strong and tough
Applications:Food processing and kitchen equipment, surgical and medical instruments, cutlery and decorative items
Alloys
Brass
Properties: Very ductile with high copper content, strong, tough and good molten fluidity with high zinc content.
Applications:Tubes, Pressings, forgings and casting for a wide range of engineering and marine applications.
Solder
Properties:Malleable, corrosion-resistant,extremely soft, low melting point and a good molten fluidity
Applications:Electronics, plumbing,Jewellery making and repairing processes where metal parts cannot be effective or safely welded
Pewter
Properties:Malleable, corrosion-resistant, extremely soft, low melting point and good molten fluidity.
Applications: Pressings,Forgings and casting for a wide range of household items, decorative features and jewellery.
