1996- E K nayanar, the chief minister put forward the idea of Vizhinjam port
discussions with some consultancies- Kumar energy Corporation, Hyderabad
UPA Central government didn’t gave the approval by indicating the security reasons
2006- UPA government didn’t gave permission
LDF government arranged an all party conference and went forward with the retender
Nearly 40 international companies attended
Lanco Kondapalli Power Limited came up with negative tender(Kerala government will receive money instead of giving)
LDF government started the basic works

2013- Chief Minister send a letter to restructure the port plan and make this a Public Private Partnership (PPP) agreement project

finally Adani group signed the agreement
2016 April 25th - Dheshabhimani(organ of CPM)- published a series of articles emphasising the ill effects of vizhinjam port construction, dredging
but after the election victory LDF stood forefront demanding this port
2015- project was launched by UDF government, in alliance with Adani group
CPM alleged that the project involved corruption of 6,000 crore
2016- LDF came into power- party changed its stand by continuing the project
2016 election campaign- UDF showed up the vizhinjam port as one of the great project
they failed in this election
2017- Controller and Auditor General Report
found several inaccuracies in the project -at the end of the concession period of 40 years -project would cause a a substation loss of Rs. 5,608
the total project cost compared to similar ports in the other states was highly unreasonable
Land acquisition -
state government contributed 360 acres of the land to the project and permitted AVPPL to reclaim 130 acres from the sea
2019- this year alone 603 people from 143 Families in the coastal fishing villages were shifted to relief camps due to the incursion of the sea (Thomas Lawrence, an environmental activist )
2020 May

Report states that there is no shoreline degradation in that area
2013- report submitted by firm Deloitte, which put forward the total expenditure of all three phases of the project at Rs 14,283 crore
Concluded that the port was not financially very attractive
2017 June and July - beach erosion destroyed more than 100 homes in Poonthura, Panathura and Bimapalli
2012- vizhinjam port faced opposition from the local people living in the coastal villages (UDF- ruling party )
2012 December 3- UDF floated the tenders for the development of the port as a public private partnership
2015 July 13- international competitive bidding- the contract was awarded to Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited
2014 January - project obtained the environmental clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests
2015- Local activists, on behalf of the residents, filed a plea with the National National Green Tribunal asking for the withdrawal of the environmental clearance.
argued that the port construction work would cause sea erosion and damage coasts Marine wealth
2016, September 2- tribunal’s final verdict - not found any substance in the complaints and refused to cancel the environmental clearance
It relied on a report by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services that categorically said Vizhinjam did not fall in a high erosion zone
2014 January 3 - Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India has issued environmental clearance to the Vizhinjam International Deep water Multipurpose seaport Project based on Environmental and social Impact Assessment (ESIA)
