Global Experience
Immigration to the United Kingdom
-When many immigrated over they were not treated well and treated as inferiors by employers and landlords refused to rent to immigrants. - Many of the characters in the novel grew up in poverty. Some of them moved out and had successful careers but they were still not satisfied with their lives. The novel tells the tale of the characters that were born in the city and now others are immigrating there from their own countries that they no longer want to live in.
Shintoism
- an animilistic religion and the belief that spirits and sacred places are involved with human affairs.
- Shintoism is present in Kafka on the Shore by characters going back and forth from the dream world to the real world. Shintoism says there is not a direct division of these two worlds as we see in Kafka on the Shore.
- Communication with animals is also respected in Shintoism and we see that present in this novel as Nakata Is able to speak to cats.
Han
- Han is a concept that describes very strong negative emotions, as well as a loss of identity
- In the novel "The Vegetarian", Yeong He expresses very strong negative emotions towards many people especially her father. Her father tries to force her to eat meat once she has become a vegetarian. Her family is so disappointed in her and she is beginning to lose herself both mentally and physically. The malnourishment is causing her body to deteriorate and her mind is slowly leaving her as well.
A new Kind of Refugee
- Global situations such as climate change will cause a new kind of refugee crisis in which towns become inhabitable due to factors such as water level rising.
- In "Exit West" the reader follows the lives of two refugees whose homes become inhabitable due to war. Saeed and Nadia experience much difficulty when trying to find a place to settle down.

The current refugee crisis in Europe - Many refugees are fleeing war zones in countries in Africa and others places worldwide. The countries they are seeking asylum in do not make it easy for them to do so. - The main character of "Go, Went, Gone", is very sympathetic for these refugees and realizes that they are not that different than he is. He does his best to help these refugees with things such as work and housing. Many people would not take the approach that Richard did, but the refugees desperately need people like Richard to understand and help them.
The Anthropocene
- The Anthropocene discusses our worlds current geological state and the effect that humans have on the earth.
- Janina is greatly affected by this change in our earth and wants to put a stop to it. She is very in tune with nature.
Zimbabwe's War for Liberation
- Women were treated as second class citizens and often work for no or little pay. These women were also not allowed to own property, only their husbands could.
- "This Mournable Body" looks into the life of women in Zimbabwe during this time and how they were treated.
Betrayal
Go, Went, Gone and Drive your plow over the bones of the dead
- In Go, Went, Gone, Richard is disappointed to find out that one of the refugees stole from him after all he had done for them.
- In Drive your Plow over the bones of the dead, the police and Janina's neighbors felt betrayed by Janina because she had been lying to them the whole time. She tried to convince them that the animals were the murderers when in reality it was her the whole time.

Kafka on the Shore/ Exit West
-In both of these novels, the characters are able to be in a new location without having to travel there.
- In Exit West, there are portals that open up and allow the characters to teleport to new towns or even completely different countries.
- In Kafka on the shore, these characters are able to be in other places through their dreams. For example, Kafka woke up with blood on himself but all he did was go to sleep.

The Vegetarian and Kafka on the shore
- In the Vegetarian, Yeong-he has a dream about a slaughterhouse which causes her to stop eating meat. This dream affects her real life.
- In Kafka on the Shore, Nakata and Kafka have dreams that affect their real world.

Hollowness
NW and Kafka on the Shore
-a void or emptiness waiting to be filled
- In NW, although there are not hollow characters, Leah has a hierarchy that she does not believe in, she is fighting a hollow system.
- The only hollow character in Kafka on the Shore is Johnnie Walker, he has no remorse for what he has done but instead continues his behavior and tries to bring others down.

Exit West and Go, Went, Gone
- Characters in both of these novels are faced with barriers as they both discuss the refugee crisis. These barriers include but are not limited to race, religion, gender and economic status

Treatment of Women
This Mournable Body and the Vegetarian
- In the Vegetarian, Yeong-he is not treated with respect by her Dad or her husband. Her Dad tries to force feed her meat and her husband wants to divorce her because she is no longer useful to him.
- In This Mournable Body, many women are mistreated. In the beginning, the woman on the bus is being beaten. The man that lives in the house with Tambudzai's brings in many different women without any plan to contact them again.

Animal Rights
The Vegetarian and Drive your Plow over the Bones of the Dead
- In The Vegetarian, Yeong-he completely changes her lifestyle because of the harsh realities of slaughtering animals and eating them. Even though she receives significant backlash for this decision, she holds her stance and does not break.
-In Drive your Plow over the Bones of the Dead, Janina kills the men who shot her dogs. She looked at her dogs as her daughters as they were the only family that she had. She was willing to commit murder to get revenge for these men killing her dogs. She claims that the murders were committed by the animals as backlash for hunting.

Rich vs. Happiness
NW and This Mournable Body
- In both of these novels, the main characters want to achieve a higher economic status thinking that it will make them happy and satisfied. In both novels the characters realize that money and success in careers is not the way to true happiness.
