- - - - Daniel and his younger brother were adopted by their Uncle Maurice when they were both very small.
      - Daniel hated violence.
- - - - Travelling schoolmasters travelled from place to place, which meant Daniel's education was often interrupted for long periods of time.
        
        During Daniel O' Connell's time in France he witnessed the violence of the French Revolution, and due to this violence he left only two years later.
        
        Daniel was a clever pupil and did very well at school.
        
        He qualified as a barrister, or lawyer, in 1798.
        
        Daniel had a powerful speaking voice and was excellent at debating. As a result, he became a very successful Catholic barrister.
- - - - In 1823, Daniel set up the Catholic Association.
- - - - At this time, no Catholic could: Vote, become a teacher or lawyer, set up a school or own a horse more than £5.
        
        Daniel O' Connell was a barrister, but because he was a Catholic he was not allowed to access or work in certain courts.
        
        After the rebellion, the British Government was afraid that more rebellions of the same type could take place in Ireland. To prevent this, they decided in 1800 to pass the Act of Union - this Act joined the Irish and British Parliaments.
        
        The Act of Union became law on New Years Day, 1801.
