The 1960s saw an explosion of advertising - post-war Britain saw an acceleration of advertising.
The 1960s was a time of more openly sexual material with Britain's conservative views being eroded, e.g. mini skirt was invented in 1960s.

Consumerism - during WW2 and 1960s, Britain was a time of austerity. Rationing did not end until 1954 so Larkin spent his youth with little extravagance.

Larkin worked in many libraries, including Wellington, Leicester, Belfast, and Hull. Larkin did not like students, nor academics, believing they had taken poetry away from the everyday man and held it in their elite grasp.
Larkin is critical of the way we remember - seems to consider acts of remembrance being a facade of the living not a memorial of the dead.

Larkin modelled Arnold on his colleague, Arthur Wood, deputy librarian at Hull. Larkin used to deride Wood about his marriage.
Larkin was a bachelor and never chose to marry, thus sharing similarities with the persona.

'Take One Home for the Kiddies' - an advertisement jungle used in the 1950s. Larkin may be commenting on the cruelty of treating animals like products to be sold without any care for the lives of the animals.
Larkin was caring of animals and did not like them being treated cruelly - he once killed a hedgehog by mistake and was reported to be very upset about it.

Larkin is inventing or mythologizing a past he never experienced therefore creating an overly ideal body image. He sees the image presented as a fictional place.
