1500 adults 18 or older in 2008-2010 (4day semi weighed food diary did biochem i.e. blood and urine, anthropometric measurements

Dietary Intake

Calories consumed outside of home

18-64 y = 24%

65y + = 9%

Staple foods were potatoes, bread and dairy products

Alcohol consumption

18-64y = 89% and 29% of men and 24% of women consume greater than the max rec weekly alcohol

65+ =77% (24% men and 10% women consume greater than max rec weekly alcohol)

115g/day approx 3 slices w/ 51g/day white bread and 52g/day brown bread (in line w/ rec)

61% consumers of RTE breakfast cereals 2g/day

24% consumers of hot oats 33g/day (increased from last survey)

65+

119g/day approx. 3 slices bread w/ 43g/day white and 61g/day brown

One glass milk per day (Younger adults more whole milk vs older more reduced fat milk)

More sugar sweetened drinks than no added sugar in younger adults v low consumption in older adutls

Older adults less alcohol and soft drinks , more fresh food and wholegrains
