The sandwich generation

Who are the Sandwich Generation?

What type of care and support do they provide?

The shift of care responsibilities between parent and child

provide 75% of the informal care for older adults

The benefits to the different individuals involved (children, parents, grandchildren)

Balancing their nuclear family life with their extended family life obligations

The consequences on the caregiver

Emotional - They will support their older family members through the end of their lives.

Physical - This is the main one since they provide food care and sometime more than that in order to keep their older family members comfortable and healthy

Financial (often they will provide food, clothing, and places to live for their older family members

Parents - Extra hands to help around the house and the best part is the free babysitting ;P

Grandparents - Safe warm place to stay. No concerns of paying for your own place. You get to spend more time with people you care about before you die

Children - More faces and the ability to learn from their older family members more closely than before

The mostly belong to Generation X as of 2021 BUT as people grow older that will change.

Canadians between 45 and 64

Less sleep is also often a common problem for those in the sandwich generation

They are not able to take time to themselves as often and will normal give up a hobby or two in order to make time for their busier schedule.

Higher stress levels due to the fact they have to take care of and provide for more people

Have to deal with the dependency of the older parents. Much more difficult than babies because they are heavier and have their own desires and thoughts.

The roles have switched on their heads parents are now children and children are now the parents.

Now have to provide for not only the children they might have but they also have to provide for their parents as though they are children.

Lots of money is spent taking care of people who used to take care of them. extra costs like medicine and other things fall on your shoulders

MUCH less money is saved and they normally live paycheck to paycheck
