Holism and Reductionism
Hollosism
Looks at a system as a whole and does not see to subdivide behaviour or or experience into smaller units
Humanistic focuses on individuals experience, which something that can not be reduced
Use qualitative methods to investigate and themes are analysed rather than breaking down into components

Biological Reductionism
-
Works backwards as drugs that have been effective in treating OCD have serotonin in them. Then working backwards low serotonin may be a cause of OCD. We have reduced OCD to the level of neurotransmitter activity

Evaluation
Practical value
Holistic accounts of human behaviour may become to hard to use and they become more complex. if we know there are many factors to contribute to depression then it becomes too difficult to understand which one is more influential. it is then difficult to know what to priotise in therepy

higher level
limitation of the reductionist is that some behaviours can only be understood at a higher level. often there are aspects of social beahviours thta emerge wiht groups and connot be fully undertsaood in terms of individuals
For example stanford prison study and the effect to conformity to social roles in prisons and guards could not be understood by observing individually. It was the interactions between people and behaviour of that group that was important
there is no confprmity gene so social process of behaviour can only be explained at level which they occur
