National Children's Food Survey II (NCFS II) (5-12 y/o)
Background
IUNA cross sectional survey (2019)
600 children 5-12 y (300 boys 300 girls) recorded 4 day intake incl. 1 weekend day
Height, weight, % body fat and waist to hip ratio measured
Urine sample taken for salt intake
Dietary Intake
Bread
Consumed by all children 85 g/day (approx 2 slices)
White bread 53g/day
Brown bread 25g/day
Breakfast cereals
91% of children consumed breakfast cereals
85% consumed RTE breakfast cereals (28g/day)
28% consumed hot oat cereals like porridge (25g/day)
Average daily amount of bread not changed since 2003-4 (82g) however amount of wholemeal/brown bread higher (25g v 12g)
Fruit and Vegetables
Consumed by all children approx. 3 servings/day (Rec is 5-7 servings)
Most common fruits i.e. apple, orange, banana (Avg 90g discrete fruit intake per day)
Veggies alone (discrete) consumed by 85% of kids (avg daily intake 40g equiv to 1 medium cooked carrot or 1 tbsp baked beans) and veggies part of meal i.e. stew
Overall intake is low
Meat and products
Processed meat
91% of kids eat processed meat and on average 41g/day (more processed than fresh)
Fresh meat
73% consume fresh meat average 28g/day
Main sources poultry (avg 18g/day 56% of kids) and beef (avg 7g/day 29% of kids)
Fish
41% consumed fish
Mainly coated white fish (19%)
Beverages
One glass milk per day mainly whole milk rather than reduced fat
Main beverages are water, milk, soft drinks and unsweetened fruit juice
Avg water intake 450g
Soft drinks consumed by 67% of kids avg 160g/day (110g of no added sugar variety and 50g being sugar sweetened)
Sugar sweetened soft drinks lower than 2003-4 suvey which the avg was 252g)

Health Status
16.4 % overweight and obese (11.7 overweight, 4.7% obese)
Lower than 2003-4; 25% (boys 19% and girls 30%)
Boys 13.9% OW/OB whereas girls higher at 19.2%
69% of kids received rec 'at least 60 mins physical activity' per day
