Mrs. Dalloway’s Social System: “ she has indeed become “the perfect hostess,” as Peter predicted she would, with all the suppression of self that this ideal demands” (Zwerdling, 79). Zwerdling’s analysis of what the role of women was in society in Mrs. Dalloway reveals that Clarissa neglected parts of herself to conform to societal standards. Furthermore he is criticizing the kind of society Clarissa belonged to, where men like Richard were traditional, classist, and sexist.
