WORK RELATED STRESS &
STRESS MANAGEMENT
General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)?
The stages the body goes through in response to stress.
GAS has
3 stages
.
ALARM REACTION
:check:
When the physiological stress reaction is
triggered by a threat or a challenge
.
In response to the initial shock, an individual's energy level and coping ability will drop.
It will turn into the second stage which is
(resistance)
RESISTENCE
:check:
Body begins to repair itself
and normalize heart rate, blood pressure and more.
Activates mechanism to overcome @ remove the source of stress.
The body reduces to the immune system.
(People tend to catch a cold @ some other illness when they experience prolonged stress)
Prolonged stress that is not resolved leads to the third stage (
exhaustion
).
EXHAUSTION
:check:
Occur when the
first two stages of activation continue over time
, causing a
breakdown in your body's balance
.
People have a limited resistance capacity.
If the source of stress persists the individual will move into exhaustion stage.
This will increased risk of long term physiological and psychological damage.
(Eg: Diabetes @ heart disease, may develop around this time.)
WHAT IS STRESS?
Feeling of tense, anxious and worried
Hans Selye
: Negative or positive condition that respond to a stresser that gave impact to a person's mental or physical health and their wellbeing.
WHAT ARE STRESSORS?
Causes of stress.

Any situation in which a person's bodily or emotional well-being is threatened physical or emotional.
Eg: Heavy workload/ conflicts with co-workers or bosses/ bullying/ harassments.
Task-control Stressors
:check:
Due to lack control over how and when tasks are performed.
Stress increase with responsibility.
Low task control increase employees burnout/ high workload.
Role-Related stressors
:check:
Role conflict = Incongruity @ imcompitability of expectation related with the person's role
Role ambiguity = Uncertain task & social expectation
Work overload = Increase hours & intensity
Interpersonal Stressor
:check:
All interactions that occur with
individuals in the workplace
that have different characteristic. (
Groupmates /superior/ boss
)
Workplace violence/ Team dynamic/ Psychological harassment/ Sexual harassment/ Quid pro quo
Organizational and Physical Environment Stressors
:check:
ORGANIZATIONAL
Related to organizational issues (
downsizing
)
Effect layoff survivors/ reduce job security/ additional workload/
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
Due to excersive noise/ poor lighting & hazard
Non-Work Stressors
:check:
Time based conflict = Due to business travel/ inflexible/ rotating work schedules
Strain based conflict = Work stress affects home, and vice versa
Role behaviour conflict = Incompatible work and family roles
INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES IN STRESS
Difference stress level, although exposed to the same stressor.
Use different stress coping strategies
TYPE B
:check:
( Resilience to stress )
Characterized by a relaxed/ patient/ easy-going nature.
Work steadily & enjoying achievements.
Do not tend to become stress when goals are not achieved.
TYPE A
:check:
( Workaholism )
Competitive and self-critical
Strive toward goals
Strive to think or do two or more things at once
CONSEQUENCES OF DISTRESS
Physiological :check:
(Cardiovascular disease/ hypertension/ headaches)
Behavioral :check:
(Work performance/ accidents/ absenteeism/ aggression/ poor decision)
Psychological :check:
(Dissatisfaction/ moodiness/ depression/ emotional fatigue)
MANAGING WORK-RELATED STRESS
WITHDRAW FROM THE STRESSOR

* Permanent withdrawal
Remove employees from jobs not aligned with their competencies (relocate, transfer)
* Temporary withdrawal
The employees itself

( Eg: Flexible working time/ job sharing/ teleworking/ personal leave )

Help employees improve their self concept. (
