Isolation
-
Isolation is a very common theme in society's work culture that is caused by an obsession to success and can be seen as a theme in many of the novels we have read #
-
The Circle
As technology progressed, the company had installed cameras in Mae's parents home. As her parents fought against it, she decided to favor in side with the company. This strained her relationship with her parents. #
-
-
In a not so futuristic world a tech company named The Circle virtual monitor's everyones daily lives no matter where they may be, thus leaving privacy and personal relationships at stake
-
-
Bartleby the Srivener
Bartleby the Scrivener is a short story about a man who has found himself lost and isolated inside the confines of the everyday working culture in America. This transcends into the ultimate case of isolation and lack of communication that eventually drives Baretly to his death. #
The repetition of the of the phrase " I would prefer not to" by Bartleby shows his resistance to work along with the idea of miscommunication
-
The subtleness in the way Bartleby refuses to do work amazes the boss and makes him draw a personal guilt and compassion for the struggling Bartleby
-
Keiko, the protagonist of the novel works at a convince store where work and dedication/love to her job causes her to turn a blind eye to the "normal" ideas of society that surround her. #
-
While society may view someone as different, if happiness is derived from it then it should be left alone
“She's far happier thinking her sister is normal, even if she has a lot of problems, than she is having an abnormal sister for whom everything is fine.”
-
This mix between thinking it is a love story or a horror story shows how truly unhappy they are with themselves
-
Technology Advances
With advances in technology, it is easier for people to gain and control power over others which can lead to too much control
Remains of the Day
In this novel, Stevens a loyal and hard working butler where he works for his owner, Lord Darlington, shows a story of a man desperately trying to achieve dignity
“After all, what can we gain in forever looking back and blaming ourselves if our lives have not turned out quite as we might have wished?”
-
As the novel comes full circle Stevens finds himself questioning his full devotion to his work as he blocked other things out
When his father passed away, Stevens shed a tear but refused to stop working as it would affect his "dignity" #

Severance
In Ling Ma's novel, the protagonist, Candace Chen work in NYC at a publishing company where she lives a normal life, but her resistance to leaving her job and chasing her dreams haunts her
The Shen Fever, which has a massive breakout in the US, almost replicates a zombie apocalypse. Instead the disease causes people to keep doing the same things over and over again until they die.
-
As she becomes prisoner by a man named Bob, among the only few people still unaffected by the fever, she begins to wish she had made changes earlier in her life and maybe chased her own dreams
This can highlight that the amount of time you spend continuously doing something you do not enjoy, may ultimately lead to a point where there is nothing you can do #
Work culture can make some people so routine oriented that they forget how spontaneous life can and should be
“have always lived in the myth of New York more than in its reality. It is what enabled me to live there for so long, loving the idea of something more than the thing itself.”
